After-school programs

Kids' programIf you are interested in opening a fencing after-school program, you came to the right place. Midwest Fencing Academy partners with schools and park districts in Chicago and the suburbs to promote fencing among elementary and high school kids. Below you can find more information about programs we offer.
Please contact us to discuss the needs of your school.

How does fencing program benefit the children?

  • Increases health, wellness and fitness by keeping kids physically active.
  • Trains balance, coordination, agility and quicker reflexes.
  • Promotes discipline and good sportsmanship.
  • Develops mental skills as in fencing kids have to solve the problems presented by their opponents to score points. They learn action/reaction, basic strategy as well as acquire an ability to make lighting fast analyses of tactical situations.
  • Provides fun and safe place for kids during after school hours.
  • Engages youth in positive, potential life-long recreational pursuits.
  • Fencing is as fun as it is competitive. MFA’s high school fencers are on the top of admittance lists of such prestige universities as Princeton, Northwestern, University of Pennsylvania, Duke University and Ohio State University.

What are the requirements of the program?

  • The school registers kids interested in participating in fencing program and reserves a space (hard floor and high ceiling like in a gym would be ideal).
  • We provide all the equipment, uniforms and fencing masks.
  • Our instructor organizes one hour long sessions full of games and fun to keep kids active and interested in fencing. The bouting is held in an easy, no pressure atmosphere.
  • There could be up to eight kids in a group.
  • The sessions are once or twice a week (one hour each), depending on the number of participants and availability of the gym.
  • School’s teachers’ presence is welcomed but not necessary.
  • As the program develops and the kids get more familiar with fencing, they can participate in interschool tournaments.

When can we start?

The after-school fencing program is available whole year long. It usually starts at the beginning of a school year and lasts until June (with Christmas and spring breaks). However, it is possible to start a new program anytime during the school year.
We also offer summer camps in August.
